Fish Camp, California, weather forecast

Fish Camp

Fish Camp is a small community 2 miles south of Yosemite National Park on Highway 41.  The early residents consisted mainly of loggers who worked in the Sierra National Forest.  Water was diverted in the 1870’s from White Chief Mountain, creating Lewis Creek.   Lewis Creek was used by the loggers to transport lumber to Madera.

Fish Camp resides at approximately 5,000 feet in elevation and enjoys cool summers and peaceful white winters.

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

On your way to Yosemite National Park, don’t miss the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad.  The Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company was in operation from 1899 to 1931.   During their years in business, over a billion board feet of lumber was logged from the forests. Five wood-burning locomotives hauled massive log shipments to the mill over the rail.

Today, the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a restoration of the original Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company Railroad. A portion of the original track has been reconstructed utilizing techniques commonly used over a century ago. Two vintage Shay locomotives have been obtained from the Westside Lumber Co. and restored to provide authentic steam power for the trains.  Shay #15, constructed in 1913, weighs 120,000 lbs (60 tons). Shay Number 10, constructed in 1928, weighs in at 166,000 lbs (83 tons) and is by far the heaviest narrow gauge Shay locomotive in use today. Railcars once used for transporting logging and track crews have been refurbished for passenger adventures.
